CBG, also known as cannabigerol or cannabigerolic acid (CBGa) is what the cannabis plant forms before turning into the CBD or THC cannabinoids. One interesting differentiator is that CBG directly attaches to the CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors in the endocannabinoid system (ECS) within the body, where CBD works indirectly with the receptors in the ECS. Dr. Torradas states that, “In terms of how well it connects to CB1 and CB2 receptors, CBG seems to be much more effective and direct than CBD.”
Looking at the composition of the hemp plant, when at maturity it contains mostly CBD, less than .3% THC, and only small amounts of CBG. This article reports that harvesting the cannabis plant before maturity can increase the amounts of CBG found in the plant, as they typically only contain 1 or 2 % CBG and up to 20% CBD.
This study stated that, “the non-psychotropic phytocannabinoid, CBG, may exert beneficial actions with therapeutic potential via cannabinoid receptors.” Results indicated that CBG can help protect against oxidative stress and even inflammation. Specific ailments that can be benefited include Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and Huntington’s disease,

CBG appears to be so promising that biotechnology companies including Demetrix want to provide samples of CBG for innovative CBD companies that want to explore using a newly studied cannabinoid. Demetrix’s COO stated, ‘Our fermentation platform allows us to produce highly pure CBG that is always THC-free, and our foundational research shows CBG has promising skin health applications due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory performance.’
According to CBD Health & Wellness, CBG “may have potential as an analgesic or antidepressant, and may also provide benefits for psoriasis.” Although studies on CBG are more limited, the benefits appear to suggest that both CBD and CBG share similar benefits when ingested and applied topically. According to Beauty Independent, the combination of CBD and CBG in skincare products have proven to be beneficial in obtaining clear, acne-free, healthy skin. The article reads, ‘CBD overall is an anti-inflammatory component. But, with a mix of CBG and CBN combined, it’s going to give you a more potent formula.’
